Salmonella an Adulterant? National Chicken Council Bawks

The USDA announced plans this week to make it illegal to sell chicken Kiev and other stuffed, breaded, raw chicken products that are contaminated with Salmonella. Declaring Salmonella an "adulterant" in this subset of the vast array of poultry products available to American consumers is a small step forward in the agency's stated goal of remaking its strategy for controlling Salmonella in poultry. But it made big news. Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), who is perhaps the greatest champion of food safety in Congress, released a statement calling the announcement a "vital first step to improved protections for the public from foodborne illness." Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Kirkwood Breaded Stuffed Chicken Ends

The Salmonella outbreak linked to Kirkwood breaded stuffed chicken produced by Serenade Foods has ended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  In all, 36 people in 11 states have been sickened. Twelve people were hospitalized. The patient case count by state is: Arizona (4), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (1), Illinois (10), Indiana (4), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Nevada (1), New York (7), Ohio (1), and Oklahoma (2). The new cases since the last update on August 11, 2021 are from Arkansas, Ohio, and Oklahoma. The case count increased by eight patients since that last update. Raw Breaded Stuffed Chicken Salmonella Outbreak Over According to USDA

The raw breaded stuffed chicken Salmonella outbreak is over, according to the USDA Outbreak Investigation Table, even though the outbreak has not been declared over on the CDC's investigation notice. The CDC investigation has not been updated since August 11, 2021. As of August 10, 2021, 28 people in eight states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. Illness onset dates ranged from February 21, 2021 to June 28, 2021. The patient case count by state is: Arizona (1), Connecticut (1), Illinois (9), Indiana (4), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Nevada (1), and New York (7). Active Food Poisoning Outbreak Investigations From FDA and USDA

What are the current active food poisoning outbreak investigations that the FDA and USDA are investigating? While there have been several outbreak investigations that have closed, there are still six open investigations on the FDA Outbreak Table, and one, possibly two, investigations on the USDA Table. On the FDA Table, there are two cyclospora outbreak investigations. Neither has any product linked to it. The first outbreak has 37 patients, an increase of two more patients since the last update 12 days ago. USDA Releases Serenade Raw Breaded Stuffed Chicken Distribution List

The USDA has released the Serenade raw breaded stuffed chicken retail distribution list for that company's recalled products. These products are linked to a multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 28 people in eight states. The USDA statement at the top of the list reads: "FSIS has reason to believe that the following retail location(s) received frozen, raw, breaded and pre-browned stuffed chicken products that have been recalled by Serenade Foods, a Milford, Indiana establishment. This list may not include all retail locations that have received the recalled product or may include retail locations that did not actually receive the recalled product. Where Were Milford Valley Kirkwood Stuffed Chicken Products Sold?

The Salmonella enteritidis raw frozen stuffed chicken breast outbreak has now sickened at least 28 people in eight states. We know that Serenade Foods products have been recalled and may be associated with this outbreak. But where were the Dutch Farms Milford Valley Kirkwood stuffed chicken breast products sold? The USDA has yet to release a retail distribution list. One of the brand names, Kirkwood, is sold at ALDI stores. And indeed, ALDI has posted a recall notice on their site. Kirkwood Broccoli & Cheese Stuffed Chicken and Kirkwood Cordon Bleu Stuffed Chicken are both recalled.  The Broccoli & Cheese variety is sold in 5 ounce individually wrapped packages, with UPC number 4099100005219 and best if used by date February 24, 2023. The frozen stuffed breaded chicken Salmonella outbreak has now sickened at least 28 people in eight states. That's an increase of 11 new patients and two new states since the last update on June 2, 2021. And since that last update, a recall of Serenade Foods frozen stuffed breaded raw chicken products has been issued. The recall covers four brands and varieties: Dutch Farms Chicken with Broccoli and Cheese, Milford Valley Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese, Milford Valley Chicken Cordon Bleu, Kirkwood Raw Stuffed Chicken, Broccoli & Cheese, and Kirkwood Raw Stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu. Serenade Foods Frozen Stuffed Chicken Recalled For Salmonella

Serenade Foods frozen stuffed chicken breasts are being recalled for possible Salmonella enteritidis contamination. These products may be associated with a multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 28 people in eight states. Way back in June 2021, one of Food Poisoning Bulletin's journalists, Carla Gillispie, identified Serenade Foods' products as items that may be tied to this outbreak. The CDC investigation has not been officially updated since June 2, 2021, but at that time the notice said that 17 people in six states are sick. Is Serenade Foods tied to Breaded Chicken Salmonella Outbreak?

Food safety investigators working with Salmonella lawyers at Pritzker Hageman have identified an establishment where breaded chicken products associated with an ongoing Salmonella outbreak were made.   People sickened in this outbreak reported eating chicken cordon bleu, chicken with broccoli and cheese, and chicken Kiev they had purchased frozen from grocery stores before they became ill. During an investigation of the outbreak, which includes 17 confirmed cases from six states, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture found the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis in Kirkwood Chicken Cordon Bleu. Kirkwood is an ALDI store brand but it may not be the only brand associated with this outbreak. Case patients reported eating products sold under a variety of brand names. … [Read more...]
