The FDA is weighing in on the multistate red onion Salmonella Newport outbreak that has sickened at least 396 people in 34 states. The FDA is collaborating with the Public Health Agency of Canada, where more than a hundred people are sick with the same strain of Salmonella Newport. On July 30, 2020, Canadian health officials announced they had determined that red onions from the U.S. were a potential source of the outbreak. Sysco red onions that were imported from the United States were recalled in that country. As of April 20, 2018, there are officially 53 people sick in the E. coli O157:H7 HUS outbreak that is linked to romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, according to the CDC. But how many people are really sick in this multistate outbreak? According to news reports and state health departments, the outbreak total could be 66. On Friday, April 20, 2018, the Alaska Department of Health & Social Services issued a press release stating that eight confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections have been identified at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center. Now 36 People Sick in the Richey, MT E. coli Outbreak
The Dawson County Heath Department and the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services have announced that there are now 36 people sick in the E. coli outbreak associated with the Richey Centennial Event & All Class Reunion. That event took place on July 15th through the 17th, 2016. Public health officials say it is too early to definitively state the cause of the outbreak. Local food vendors have been cooperating in the investigation. The Health Department is encouraging anyone who may have leftover foods from those events to not consume them. Law Firm Files First Lawsuit in Costco Chicken Salad E. coli Outbreak
In what is believed to be the first lawsuit arising from the ongoing nationwide Costco chicken salad E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, lawyers have filed a case on behalf of a woman sickened in the outbreak. The suit is against Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corporation. She ate "Costco Rotisserie Chicken Salad" that was made at Costco stores with Taylor Farms celery and onion mix. The suit was filed in the Butte division of U.S. District Court along with associates at the Bozeman law firm Beck & Amsden. Costco identified Taylor Farms of California as the supplier of the onion and celery mix used in that salad. The FDA has announced that it appears onions and celery in Costco chicken salad may be the source of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria that has sickened at least 19 people in 7 states. Those people live in California (1), Colorado (4), Missouri (1), Montana (6), Utah (5), Virginia (1), and Washington state (1). According to news outlets, Taylor Farms in Salinas, California is the supplier of the vegetables for Costco Wholesale. The vegetables from that supplier are used in the chicken salads sold in all of the company's U.S. stores. Of those 19 ill persons, 16 have been interviewed. The Colorado Department of Public Health andEnvironment (CDPHE) is investigating an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to chicken salad purchased at Costco stores in that state in late October. At least four people have been sickened with E. coli O157:H7 infections in Colorado. Other states with confirmed E. coli cases linked to Costco chicken salad are Utah, Montana, and Washington.
