On the last update on case counts, which was issued in July 2021, there were only 11 people sick and two hospitalized. Another state, Pennsylvania, was added to the case count. The case count by state is: Illinois (18), Michigan (1), Pennsylvania (2), and Wisconsin (10). Illness onset dates range from June 10, 2021 to August 18, 2021. In the Centers for Disease Control's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) for the week of August 20, 2021, a report details the protracted intermittent Salmonella outbreak that was linked to a restaurant in Michigan from 2008 to 2019. The Salmonella Mbandaka contamination was impossible to eradicate, and the restaurant was permanently closed in 2018. In 2018, Michigan public health officials found that a single restaurant in southwest Michigan was the source for the Salmonella Mbandaka infections since 2008. Isolates from 36 ill persons shared two highly related pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and highly related whole genome sequencing subtypes. The CDC is weighing in on the reopened Salmonella Weltevreden shrimp outbreak that has sickened at least nine people in four states. Three people are hospitalized because they are so sick. That is an increase of three new illnesses, one new hospitalization, and two new states since the last update in July 2021. This investigation was closed, but was reopened when more ill persons were discovered. The case counts by state are: Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), and Rhode Island (1). Shrimp Salmonella Outbreak Continues With Three More Sickened
The FDA says that the shrimp Salmonella outbreak continues because three more patients have been identified. Now nine people are sick. In addition, two more states, Michigan and Rhode Island, have been added. The outbreak was declared over on July 21, 2021. Avanti Frozen Foods issued a recall for their frozen cooked shrimp on June 25, 2021. The case count by state is now Nevada (4), Michigan (2), Rhode Island (1), and Arizona (2). The last illness onset date is July 20, 2021. In the previous investigation notice, which was on July 21, 2021, the last illness onset date was April 25, 2021. The BrightFarms salad greens Salmonella outbreak has been updated by the FDA. A new recall, for BrightFarms baby spinach, was issued on July 28, 2021. The last best by date for this product, through 7/26/21 (July 26, 2021), has ended so it should not be available in stores, but some people may still have it in their home refrigerators. The company is not producing or distributing any product from areas associated with environmental samples that tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. All of the salads that have been recalled were produced in the company's Rochelle, Illinois greenhouse farm that is located in Ogle County. The FDA is weighing in on the BrightFarms Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has sickened at least 11 people in three states. Two people have been hospitalized. The outbreak has grown from the eight patients mentioned in the first investigation outbreak notice on July 14, 2021. The eleven patients live in Michigan (1), Illinois (6) and Wisconsin (4). Illness onset dates range from June 10, 2021 to July 1, 2021. The FDA has visited BrightFarms farm where the salad greens were grown in a greenhouse, and has collected samples. Do Not Eat Shetler Family Farm Raw Milk Butter Products in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is telling consumers do not eat Shetler Family Farm raw milk butter products that were made at a dairy farm in Morley, Michigan. The production and sale of raw milk and raw milk products is a violation of Michigan law. In addition, these products were made in a facility that is not licensed or inspected by the government. A Michigan food inspector discovered about 75 pounds of raw milk butter offered for retail sale during a routine inspection of a convenience store located in Clare, Michigan. The butter was packaged in one pound clear plastic containers and is labeled as "Non-GMO Sweet Cream Butter w/Himalayan salt." Michigan National Guard Sickened After Being Served Undercooked Food
About 50 members of the Michigan National Guard have been sickened with what may be food poisoning after they were allegedly served undercooked chicken and food that is "raw and moldy" while deployed in Washington, D.C. Some were sent to the hospital. Some troops were hospitalized, according to a letter from the state's House delegation that was sent to CBS News, although the National Guard denies that. The troops were served food by private contractors hired by the National Guard Bureau. Pictures of undercooked chicken have been circulating on social media.
