Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 162 in 25 States

A cucumber Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 162 people in 25 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fresh Start Produce cucumbers are implicated in this outbreak. The strain of Salmonella is Salmonella Africana. CDC and FDA are also investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections, with 158 illnesses in 23 states. The two outbreaks are similar, including where and when illnesses occurred and the demographics. Investigators are working to determine whether the two outbreaks could be linked to the same food. Chocolate Milk in New York Recalled For Improper Pasteurization

Chocolate milk sold in New York State is being recalled for improper pasteurization, according to New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. The milk was produced by Meadowbrook Farms Dairy, which is located in Clarksville, New York. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with this issue. Pasteurization heats milk briefly to a temperature high enough to destroy pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, brucella, and Salmonella. Unpasteurized, or raw, milk, has been linked to many food poisoning outbreaks over the years. The chocolate milk was sold across the Capital region. Sunset View Creamery Raw Milk Recalled For Campylobacter

Sunset View Creamery raw milk is being recalled for possible Campylobacter jejuni contamination, according to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. One illness has been reported to the department. The dairy is located at 4970 County Road 14 in Odessa, New York, in Schuyler County. A preliminary test conducted by a sample of the unpasteurized milk collected by an inspector tested positive for the pathogen. On April 25, 2024, the producer was notified of this result. Another test that was conducted and completed on April 29, 204, confirmed the presence of Campylobacter in the raw milk. A hepatitis A positive worker at the Main Deck Restaurant in Penn Yan, New York may have exposed customers to the virus, according to Yates County Public Health. The restaurant is located at 301 Lake Street in Penn Yan. The exposure took place between March 27 and April 12, 2024. Doug Sinclair, Yates County Public Health Director, said in a statement, "While the risk of hepatitis A infection is low, we must act carefully to prevent the spread of this very contagious disease. Anyone who may have eaten at this restaurant during this timeframe should check their immunization status and if not already vaccinated against hepatitis A, come to our free clinic or visit their healthcare provider if they are experiencing symptoms." Big Brook Farm raw milk may contain Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, according to a Consumer Alert issued by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this item. The farm is located at 6063 Weaver Road, Lee Center in Oneida County, New York. A sample of Big Brook Farm raw milk that was collected by that agency tested positive. On March 13, 2024, the producer was notified about a preliminary positive test. One death associated with peanuts that were not declared in Stew Leonard's Florentine Cookies has been reported in Connecticut, according to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Food, Standards, and Produce Safety Division (DCP) and the Connecticut Department of Public Health. A recall has been issued for the cookies. The cookies were only sold at Stew Leonard's grocery stores in the cities of Danbury and Newington, Connecticut. The cookies were produced by a wholesaler, Cookies United, located in Islip, New York, and were labeled with the Stew Leonard's brand name. There are now 354 kids sick in the WanaBana purees lead and chromium poisoning outbreak, according to the CDC. The FDA has found chromium in those products. There are 93 confirmed cases of lead poisoning, 233 probable cases, and 28 suspect cases.
