Victor Dog Food Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Infants

The Victor Dog Food Salmonella Kiambu outbreak has sickened at least seven people, mostly infants, in seven states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Several brands and types of dog and pet food have been recalled in association with this outbreak. The recalling firm is Mid America Pet Food. The case count by state is: Alabama (1), California (1), Florida (1), Hawaii (1), Kentucky (1), Minnesota (1), and Oklahoma (1). Most of the patients (86%) are one year old or younger, and the remaining patient is under the age of 65. Illness onset dates range from January 14, 2023 to August 19, 2023. Mid America Pet Food Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Seven

A Mid America Pet Food Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least seven people, and the voluntary recall from that company has been expanded to include more products. The original recall was for Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula and was issued on October 30, 2023. As of November 1, 2023, seven people have reported Salmonella infections in association with these products. The recalling firm is Mid America Pet Food of Mount Pleasant, Texas. The pet food was produced at the company's Mount Pleasant facility. The brands made at that location include Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and some Member’s Mark varieties with Best By Dates before 10/31/24. FDA Adds WanaBana Lead Exposures to CORE Outbreak Table

The FDA has added the WanaBana lead exposures to their CORE Outbreak Investigation Table. It joins the unsolved E. coli O121:H19 outbreak in a not yet identified food, and the Salmonella Thompson outbreak that is linked to Gills Onions diced onions. The new addition to the Table is regarding seven children in five states who have suffered acute lead poisoning after eating WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree. The company has voluntarily recalled that product regardless of expiration date or lot number. Two other products have also been recalled for high lead content: Schnucks Cinnamon Applesauce and Weis Cinnamon Apple Sauce. New E. coli O121:H19 Outbreak on FDA CORE Table

A new E. coli O121:H19 outbreak has been added to the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table. The only other outbreak on the table is the Salmonella Thompson outbreak linked to diced onions. The new E. coli O121:H19 outbreak has sickened at least 37 people. No food has been identified as the cause of the illnesses. We don't know the states where patients live, the illness onset dates, or the patient age range. The FDA has initiated traceback, but has not started a recall, started onsite inspections, or analyzed any foods. E. coli O121 is one of the Big Six Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) bacteria that the government started tracking in ground beef this year. Three More Sick in Raw Farm Raw Milk Salmonella Outbreak

Three more people are sick in the Raw Farm raw milk Salmonella outbreak in California, according to San Diego County officials. Those three patients live in San Diego County, bringing the total of patients in that county to 12. And there are seven ill persons who live in Orange County, so the outbreak total so far stands at 19. The farm is located in Fresno, California. Cases began in late September. The most recent illness onset date was October 17, 2023. The outbreak may continue to row, since it can take time when someone gets sick until they visit a doctor, get teated, are diagnosed, and that diagnosis is shared with public health officials. A Gills diced onion Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 73 people in 22 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fifteen of those patients have been hospitalized because they are so sick. The case count by state is: Arizona (1), California (17), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Iowa (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (4), Indiana (2), Kentucky (1), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (6), Montana (2), North Dakota (2), New York (1), Ohio (3), Oregon (3), Tennessee (1), Texas (1), Utah (17), Virginia (3), Wisconsin (3), and Wyoming (1). Buckhead Fresh Market Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Consumers

A Buckhead Fresh Market Salmonella outbreak in Georgia has sickened an unnamed number of consumers, according to WSB-TV. A whistleblower told that news outlet that food sold from the deli may be associated with this outbreak. That Fresh Market is located on Roswell Road in Buckhead. The former employee told the news reporter, "A customer got sick from our chicken salads. Associates were going inside the deli with no hair nets. When they're handling customer foods, they're not wearing gloves." The whistleblower also said that there were poor sanitary conditions at the deli. Raw Farm Milk Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Nine in California

A Raw Farm milk Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least nine people in San Diego County, California, according to the County of San Diego health officials. The illnesses are linked to unpasteurized milk products produced by Raw Farm LLC, which is located in Fresno, California. The outbreak began in late September 2023. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency is urging anyone who may have recently purchased Raw Farm LLC raw milk or products made from raw milk to throw it away. The patient age range is from one to 41 years old. All consumed Raw Farm LLC raw milk or milk products the week before they got sick. Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Wild Songbirds in 12 States

Back in 2021 we told you about a Salmonella outbreak that was allegedly linked to wild songbirds. An investigation that was published in Emerging Infectious Diseases found that 30 people in 12 states were sickened in this outbreak. The outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium was first identified by public health officials in February 2021 in eight patients who lived in Oregon and Washington. Whole genome sequencing found that the isolates collected from sick people were genetically related to one another as well as to an isolate from a pine siskin bird, which is a type of finch, in Oregon in December 2020. Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak Solved, But No Brands Named

The cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak has been solved, but no brand names or farms were named, according to the FDA. There are only two active outbreak investigations on the FDA CORE Outbreak Investigation Table at this time. Eleven of the seventeen outbreaks the FDA has investigated during 2023 have been unsolved, with no brand name, restaurant, or processor named. The Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to cantaloupe as well as watermelons sickened at least 11 people. The FDA conducted traceback, inspected a facility, collected samples, and analyzed those samples, but could not identify a brand name or farm.
