An Earth Grown Falafel E. coli outbreak has sickened at least 20 people in six states, according to the FDA. The outbreak announcement was inside a recall notice posted today. Two varieties of the falafel are included in this recall: Traditional Vegan and Garlic & Herb. The recalling firm is Cuisine Innovations Unlimited LLC of Lakewood, New Jersey. The products were sold exclusively by Aldi. The recalled products are Earth Grown Vegan Traditional Falafel and Earth Grown Garlic & Herb Falafel in 12 ounce packages. The generic Cyclospora outbreak illnesses have reached 800, with 52 in the hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That's an increase of 416 more ill persons since the last update issued a month ago, and 22 more people hospitalized. None of these patients had a history of international travel during the 14 day period before illness onset. And there is still no food or foods or venues named by the government. The median illness onset date is June 29, 2022. The illness onset range is from May 3, 2022 through August 12, 2022. Cyclospora illnesses have spiked to 384 sick in 22 states and 30 hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There has been a cyclospora outbreak, in fact, usually several cyclospora outbreaks, in the United States during the spring and summer months every year since 2013. This is an increase of 323 cases since the last update was issued on June 30, 2022. Cases are still being reported. Last year, there were two cyclospora outbreaks that were unsolved that sickened at least 153 people. In 2020, a cyclospora outbreak linked to Fresh Express bagged salads sickened at least 701 people in 14 states and hospitalized 38. A Wisconsin shelled pea Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least six people, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). Three people have been hospitalized because they are so sick. The peas were sold at farmers markets and farm stands in Wisconsin. The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection and local health departments are collaborating with DHS on this investigation. The six patients were sickened with the same strain of Salmonella after purchasing peas produced by Green Barn Farm Market of Ripon, Wisconsin. Tara Flour Culprit in Daily Harvest Lentil Crumbles Illnesses
Daily Harvest has identified tara flour as the apparent culprit in the illnesses that may be linked to that company's French Lentil + Leeks Crumbles. The FDA reports that there have been 277 adverse event complaints received so far, and that 96 people have been hospitalized because they are so ill; some have had their gall bladders removed. There have been almost 500 anecdotal reports of illness. The FDA has not commented on this new information as of July 19, 2022. But there is no indication of just what it is about the tara flour that has made people sick. The product is not inherently toxic. More Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek crumbles illnesses have been reported to the govnermmnt, but there are still no answers about what has caused the illnesses, according to the FDA. There have been 277 Consumer Adverse Event Reports (CAERS) and Consumer Complaints submitted to the FDA as of July 14, 2022. Ninety-six people have been hospitalized. Anecdotal reports of illness have neared 500. The FDA has started an investigation, including inspection and sample collection, to try to determine what is causing these illnesses. The FDA is investigating French Lentil and Leek Crumbles illnesses. That product is produced by Daily Harvest. Consumer complaints of gastrointestinal illness and abnormal liver function have been received and "may be attributable" to eating Daily Harvest French Lentil and Leek Crumbles frozen product. California Hepatitis Cases Added to List of Severe Illness Reports
California has ben added to the list of states reporting severe child hepatitis cases, joining Alabama, Illinois, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. There are seven California hepatitis cases, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The World Health Organization has received reports of at least 169 cases of severe pediatric hepatitis, mostly from Europe. In the United States, there are least 25 cases: nine in Alabama, two in North Carolina, three in Illinois, four in Wisconsin, and seven in California. So far there has been one death in Wisconsin, and four of these children have needed liver transplants. In most of these cases, the children had gastrointestinal symptoms before jaundice appeared. Child Hepatitis Cases Reported in Wisconsin With One Death
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is issuing a Health Alert Network Health Advisory because child hepatitis cases and adenovirus infections have been reported in that state. Officials are investigating at least four cases in Wisconsin. One child needed a liver transplant and one child died. This alleged outbreak was first reported in Alabama from November 2021 to February 2022, where nine children were sickened. Two of those children needed liver transplants. Then, three cases were announced in Illinois on April 25, 2022, with one liver transplant reported. More than 100 cases of severe hepatitis in children under the age of 10 have been reported around the world.
