There are now 20 people sick in the deadly Minnesota cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak, according to news reports. That state has the largest number of patients in this nationwide outbreak. Carlota Medus, supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Health's foodborne diseases unit, told MPR, "Currently we are still in the middle of the investigation trying to determine where people were exposed who became ill. The FDA states that WanaBana Applesauce acute lead poisoning has sickened at least seven children in five states. The product has excessively high lead levels. That number is an estimate, based on Consumer Complaint and CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System reports received by the government. The FDA first issued an advisory about the WanaBana product in late October 2023. Two other brand names of applesauce pouches have been recalled: Weis and Schnucks. In response to this investigation, WanaBana has voluntarily recalled all WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches regardless of expiration date and lot code. Missouri Man Dies After Eating Vibrio Contaminated Raw Oysters
A Missouri man has died after eating Vibrio contaminated raw oysters purchased from The Fruit Stand & Seafood located at 14433 Manchester Road in Manchester, Missouri, according to the St. Louis County Health Department. The serotype is Vibrio vulnificus. All remaining oysters have been embargoed, and anyone who bought oysters from that establishment recently should not eat them and should discard them in a sealed container. While this is not technically an outbreak because one person got sick, the illness is serious and a warning is necessary. The press release said that the oysters were probably contaminated when the establishment received them, and were not contaminated at the farmers market stand. Salmonella Sun Sprouts Warning Letter Sent After Outbreak
A Salmonella Sun Sprouts warning letter was sent to that company by the FDA after an outbreak, which happened from December 2022 to January 2023, linked to those raw sprouts sickened at least 63 people in eight states. The case count by state was: Arizona (1), Iowa (6), Kansas (6), Missouri (9), Nebraska (26), New Hampshire (1), Oklahoma (1), and South Dakota (13). Ten people were hospitalized. The FDA inspected the sprouting operation of Rhodes Legacy Inc. doing business as Sun Sprouts, because of the outbreak. FDA's traceback investigation identified the brand's alfalfa sprouts as a likely source of illnesses in that outbreak.
